1. Introduction
1.1 Background
Water is the main source of living in the world. Without water live cannot be exist. In Palestine and due to the Israeli occupation and control of the water resources, there is a serious scarcity of water and water shortages problems. Therefore, the Palestinian Authorities started to consider the construction of wastewater treatment plants and reuse of treated wastewater in agriculture.
Many Palestinian villages neither have water networks nor wastewater treatment plants. The wastewater in most of the villages is disposed of using percolating pits. Sometimes it is even disposed of in the wadies causing environmental and health problems. Therefore the construction of wastewater treatment plants is essential to clean the environment and solve the problems. It will also provide treated wastewater as an additional water resource for agriculture.
The main objective of this project is to design a wastewater treatment plant for the village of Far'un, which is located in Tulkarem district in the northern west Bank. Other objectives of the project are to reuse wastewater in agriculture and protect the groundwater. The project is concerned with a study and a conceptual design to a low cost treatment plant. The plant consists of primary treatment (septic tank), secondary treatment (rock filter) and advanced treatment (sand filter).
