

The Department of Civil Engineering aims at becoming a model department in terms of its students, faculty, and staff in Palestine and in the Arab world. The Department was established in 1979 at An-Najah National University with the department of Architecture. During the first year of its foundation, only (40) students were admitted. Since then an increasing number of students is enrolled in the Department every year forming a total number of around one thousand undergraduate students Bachelor degree in civil engineering and more than 50 graduate students (Ms) enrolled during the academic year 2011/2012.
After 32 years, the Department of Civil Engineering remains currently recognized as among the regional most prestigious civil engineering departments, with undergraduate and graduate programs rated among the top in Palestine and in the region.
The department was the first in Palestine to offer a graduate program leading to M.Sc. degree. It started admitting M.Sc. students during the academic year 1995/1996. The current number of graduate students is more than50 students. The number of department faculty members has also grown during that period.
The Department employs well-qualified faculty members with many years of academic and practical experience both regionally and internationally. The expertise of the academic staff spans the main disciplines of modern civil engineering including: Structural Engineering, Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, Transportation and Highway Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, and Construction Management Engineering.
In addition, the Department has laboratory facilities that are furnished with high quality state-of-the-art equipment facilitating advanced experimental work for teaching, research and consultancy. The laboratories are also staffed with qualified and well-trained laboratory assistants and technicians.
