Clean water forms a 1% of the total amount of water on earth. So, it’s very expensive to be wasted.

Globe suffers from huge economical and water crises. So, the need of cheap and efficient water and waste water treatment technique such as sand filter rises. Thus, a collection and analysis of sand samples from Palestine are conducted to make a comparison between geophysical and hydrological properties of sand in order to choose the most suitable sort for sand filtration unit to be designed. However; and as a result of several experiments, there is no sand sample meet sand filter specifications. For this reason, another filtration media was innovated, which was carbonized olive stone. The innovated media achieves high efficiency in terms of removing the turbidity and BOD.

A representation of the most suitable and locally manufactured granular filter is expected to be a result of this project.

A lot of previous work and research have done on sand filters but non was about sand exist in Palestine. In addition, no previous work conducted for the olive stone filters.

Objectives

  1. Sampling and studying the sand resources in Palestine.
  2. Studying the geophysical and hydrological properties of the collected sand samples.
  3. Studying the physical and hydrological properties of the carbonized olive stone.
  4. Developing carbonized olive stone media.
  5. Design the optimal granular filter which achieves high efficiency and low capital and operational costs.
