Abstract

The main purpose of this project is to determine the thermal conductivity for building stones, used in many countries of the middle east. There are many physical and chemical properties, which cause variation in the thermal conductivity from one stone to another, such as density, thermal diffusivity, the distance between atoms, and the amount of vibration between these atoms. Thermal conductivity helped us to select the best types of stones used in buildings, in order to reduce the amount of energy used  in air conditioning , and  maintain temperatures inside the buildings in preferable range, does not matter in summer, winter, or other outside thermal conditions. In the first stage of this project we made a scientific review for methods of experimental determination of  thermal conductivity. Then we will determine conductivity of the studied stones, using a Helton Device . Finally, we will design and built our own apparatus and measure the thermal conductivity using it. A comparison and discussion of the obtained results will then presented .
