Advanced Communications Lab

Department:
Telecommunication Engineering
Lab Technican:
Nuha Odeh

In this lab students will conduct advanced experiments  on topics like fiber optics, transmission lines , microwave and  antenna, work on the characteristics of fibers (structure, method of propagation, numerical aperture and attenuation), optical sources and detectors and transmission over fiber.  Transmission line experiments will cover studying delays on TL’s, standing waves, transformer matching and time domain reflectometry concept.  Microwave experiments includes investigating  Gunn oscillator characteristics, standing waves in Waveguides , directional coupler parameters and hybrid tees  characteristics. Antenna system covers  the principles of various types of antennas such as:  dipole, horn, helical, Yagi-Uda and patch antennas. These principles includes  drawing radiation patterns and measuring  gain, directivity and half power beam width of each type of the antennas.

In this laboratory we aim to teach the students:

·          how to design and conduct Fiber, Microwave, Antennas, and TL’s based experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data.

·         how to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs, within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability.

·         how to function on multi-disciplinary teams.

Experiments that will take place are:

1.

  1. Introduction to Lab Devices & Safety Instructions.
  2.  Introduction to Transmission Line
  3.  Gunn Oscillator Characteristics.
  4.  Dipole Radiation Pattern
  5.  Characteristics of Optical Cables, Optical Sources and Detectors
  6.  Frequency Response and Standing Waves in Transmission Lines
  7. Standing Waves in Waveguides and Directional Coupler
  8. Helical and Yagi-Uda Antennas
  9. Data Transmission over Fiber
  10. Transformer Matching and TDR
  11. Hybrid Tees
  12. Patch Antennas
  13.  Audio/Video Transmission over Fiber
