This project aims to improve the efficiency of Siyam Radiator Company, through improving and implementing new informational and physical systems. Knowledge enrichment on all the topics and terms as well the techniques regarding MIS in general and system improvements form the first part of this project.
Our mission statement and the objectives from this project are listed and identified, followed by the tools and methods used to help achieving the goal.
The project provides a step-by-step technique toward a set of systems which work together to achieve the goal, starting from analyzing the current system at Siyam Radiator Company; gap analysis, system requirements and modeling the information system, and ending with implementing and improvements that can be achieved in the company, such as implementing Kanban system, constructing a Barcode system, building an informational computerized system along with warehouse re-layout. Finally, at the end of the project further research and improvements are suggested.
Introduction
One of the most perplexing problems with small, medium, or large system development programs is simply being able to deliver a system, product, or service without latent defects on schedule, within budget, and make a profit.
In most competitive markets, changes in technology and other pressures force many organizations to aggressively cut realistic schedules to win contracts to sustain business operations. Many times these shortcuts violate best practices through their elimination under the premise of “selective tailoring” and economizing.
Most programs, even under near ideal conditions, are often challenged to translate User needs into efficient and cost-effective hardware and software solutions for deliverable systems, products, and services. System Engineers (SEs) leads to create a strategy to bridge the gap. They translate the User’s abstract vision into a language of specifications, architectures and designs to guide the hardware and software development activities.
Bridging the gap between User needs and development of systems, products, and services to satisfy those needs requires three types of technical activities: 1) system analysis, 2) system design, and 3) system development (i.e., implementation). Knowledge in these areas requires education, training, and experience. Also it varies significantly and primarily comes from personal study and experience over many years.
Technically there are solutions of dealing with this challenge. This project provides a flexible structural frame work toward an improved system that satisfies customers needs along with the company`s. Throughout this project we will build on workflow to arrive at the steps and practices necessary to plan and implement system analysis, design, and development strategies without sacrificing best practices objectives.
Siyam Radiator Company system is the addressed system for the improvement; although the current system works and satisfy customers and the company needs, it seems that it’s not working efficiently as so many problems in which they can be avoid occurs.
Chapter 6 system improvements and implementation presents a framework of practice-based strategies and activities for developing an improved system. However, system development requires more than simply implementing a standard framework. To understand the foundation for the framework, analyze the system, find the gaps between what the current system does and what we want it to do, set the system requirements and model the current system are the steps to follow and they present at chapter 5 system analysis.
This project does not only present systems and work flow improvements, it also provides physical improvement that is needed to work along with the improved system. Chapter 6 system improvements and implementation contains three systems to work together to obtain a whole new system at the company.
At the end of this project further researches are suggested as improvements project usually forms a loop; after getting feed backs new suggestions and improvements can be done.
Mission statement and research objectives
Mission statement
our mission is to support Siyam Radiator`s business strategy through the development, implementation and management of its technological resources. The spark that initiated our decision to start this project is the long-term chance for improvement at the company. We believed that we can offer the company an information flow that would facilitate and improve the information system, by employing technology and the use of internet. Also, we offer to improve other issues that relates to the information system such as, improving the layout of the warehouse, using a barcode system and employing the Kanban system at the factory. All that beside a software-that can compete with other systems; which provides a two-sided relation between the company`s departments and between the company and the customers, this software works also as a data base for all the information passes through the company.
- Objectives
The scope of "Improving Performance through MIS" project emerged out of building an optimal MIS model which concerned in optimizing the performance of the companies, managing the information flow between departments, controlling the data sources and monitoring these data in a way that improves the information system at the company. The objectives are:
- Understand how systems work.
- Analyze the current system.
- Track how well MIS is working and fine areas where problems occur.
- Find rooms for improvement.
- Build a new efficient system.
The goal of this research in general is to improve the system at Siyam Radiator Company through Management information system and other related necessary physical improvements. So many challenges were faced during the project; for example the fact that the company located in Jordan made it hard to get the data needed, also one of the challenges was to get enough knowledge about system designing and software programming.
Methodology
The goal of this research in general is to improve the system at Siyam Radiator Company through Management information system and other related necessary physical improvements. So many challenges were faced during the project; for example the fact that the company located in Jordan made it hard to get the data needed, also one of the challenges was to get enough knowledge about system designing and software programming.
The methodology that have been followed in this research was divided into stages; planning for the system to be designed, analyzing the case study, analyzing the current system and finally gather the data needed and model the process. However, the seven steps toward a framework of a system were followed as well along with the previous stages. The seven steps include: identify stakeholders, identify and list Actors, identify and list use case, identify and list scenarios, identify and list steps, identify and list classes/objects and manage work products.
Business case
Siyam group is a manufacturing plant for producing car radiator. There are many branches for this company. The vision for Siyam Company is to provide the highest quality of automotive spare parts and to enhance their partnership with its customers and suppliers, while gaining the confidence and respect of the international community.
The major goal of Siyam business is to add value for their employees, customers, and suppliers by providing a superior value and service while practicing honesty and fairness throughout their corporation.
This plant produces various types of radiators, aluminum and copper/brass, and our study specializes in producing copper/brass radiators. Siyam Company was chosen as a case study for this project. This project was initiated to improve the current system at the factory through using MIS and any related improvements that could be done in order to obtain an optimal system and help taking the company to the next level.
Discussion
Improving the case study of Siyam Radiator Company using management information system provided a chance for us to have a better knowledge on information system. Also it expanded the range of our project to include other improvements such as implementing Kanban system, generating a Barcode system and improving the warehouse layout.
Further improvements:
- Transform the generated Kanban system to E-Kanban.
- Provide electrical Kanban board instead of manual one.
- Provide a conveyer to transport Kanban containers.
- Include all the department in the software
- The rest activities that were not added to the software will be improved and included in the generated software.
- Add the barcode system to the software to make a complete system.
