Across the world, there continues to be huge volumes of wastewater produced. Wastewater or sewage is the byproduct of many uses of water. Pollutants must be removed from the water to protect the environment and public health. When water is used by our society, the water becomes contaminated with pollutants. If left untreated, these pollutants would negatively affect our water and environment.
The main objective of this project is to design household wastewater treatment plant that generates water suitable for garden irrigation. Especially on the rural Palestinian, this doesn‘t have sewage system and need to prevent groundwater pollution, and to protect public health from pathogenic microorganisms.
There are many programs can be used to simulate wastewater process, in this project STOAT& Steady programs were used to check wastewater effluent characteristics. Several models were tested on these programs to achieve predicted values of BOD, TSS, TKN, Ammonia, then to be compared with Palestinian standards.
Around 6 persons for each Palestinian family were assumed with 156 l/c/d wastewater generation. It was aimed to have all results within Palestinian standards for water reuse, so it was worked on nitrification, de-nitrification, BOD reduction and solids removal. Biochemical oxygen demand has been reduced but the value still out of Palestinian standards. Therefore, self-cleaning filter was suggested to help reducing BOD value and achieving desired results.
