SM100 Universal Testing Machine

SM100 Universal Testing Machine
Description

A sturdy frame supports a hydraulic jack from which a moving platform is suspended on ball joints. The space below the platform is used for tensile tests and that above it for compression tests. For tensile tests the specimens are fitted into chucks which screw onto ball joints at the top and bottom of the test section. This arrangement ensures purely axial loading. A pair of flat compression platens is supplied enabling compression tests to be performed on a wide range of material such as wood, brick and mortar.

A high-impact strength clear plastic guard is provided to protect the user during test.

Strain gauged loaded cells are incorporated into the structure and a direct reading digital read-out load indicator is supplied. This strain measurement system is calibrated at the factory against an NPL traceable standard.

A supporting table with integral cupboard, ref. SMl00h, is available. The SM100 machine has been designed for use with a hand operated hydraulic pump, TQ ref. SMl00k. This pump is supplied separately and is intended for mounting on the base of the SM100.

Alternatively, a motorized hydraulic power pack is available TQ ref. SM100j. This is supplied complete with manual pressure (load) control.

A low cost specimen mounting extensometer of simple design is available (ref. SM100d). Its high sensitivity enables accurate measurement of strain for the determination of elastic modulus, proof stress and where applicable the upper and lower yield points. The SM100d Mechanical Extensometer operates over a gauge length of 50mm and the dial gauge read-out is accurate to 0.001 mm. It may be used on specimens up to 9.8mm diameter.

An alternative electro-mechanical extensometer, SM100n, is available. This provides a direct digital read-out of extension and utilizes a precision linear potentiometer as the transducer. The maximum uninterrupted travel of the extensometer transducer is approximately 2mm but greater extensions can be accommodated by a resetting technique. Direct strain read-out is provided on a digital display in micrometers.

Specification

Maximum load: 100kN (10 tonf)

Stroke of jack: 220mm

Distance between tensile chucks: 0-200mm

Maximum distance between compression platens: 220mm

Digital read-out load indicator calibrated in both SI (kN) and imperial (tonf) units

Additional Experiments

To extend the experimental range of the equipment, the following optional ancillaries are available:

SM100e: Brinell Hardness Test -
An indenter fitted with a 10mm ball. Tests can be carried out to determine the hardness of a wide range of materials and to investigate the effects of heat treatment processes.

SM100f: Coil Spring -
This heavy duty coil spring is supplied complete with locating bosses and fits between the standard compression platens.

SM100g: Beam and Leaf Spring - The main component is a rigid support beam which bolts to the moving platform. Hardened steel knife edges can be fitted to each end of the support beam and under the centre of the frame to provide three points loading for bending of beams. The span can be varied and tests can cover both elastic and plastic bending of metal beams and rupture tests on wood and cast iron beams. A heavy duty leaf spring with roller end fittings is also supplied.
