Range of Experiments
- Equilibrium of up to six concurrent forces
- Equilibrium of up to six non-concurrent forces
- Experimental verification of the three conditions of equilibrium
- Construction of polygons of forces
Description
A force board is clamped onto the HST1 Frame in which pulleys can be fixed round the perimeter to produce an infinite variety of multi-directional forces in a vertical plane. By using a single cord ring, up to six cords can be attached and the cords tensioned with hangers and weights to obtain equilibrium. A special marking gauge is used to transfer the lines of action of the cords onto a sheet of paper clipped to the force board. Two cord rings held together by a short cord are used for non-concurrent force experiments. The set of weights for the experiment is included. As the results are entirely graphical no computer program is available for this experiment.
This equipment is part of a range designed to both demonstrate and experimentally confirm basic engineering principles. Great care has been given to each item so as to provide wide experimental scope without unduly complicating or compromising the design. Setting up time is minimal, and all measurements are made with the simplest possible instrumentation, so that the student involvement is purely with the engineering principles being taught.
