Deflection of Beams

Laboratory:
Mechanics of Materials Lab
Deflection of Beams

Range of Experiments

  • Study of the general formula for beam deflections in bending in the form y = c. WL³ / EI
  • Verification of the effect of changing the length and thickness of beams
  • Study of the way the 'constant' c is affected by the type and position of the load
  • The principle of super-position

Description

Two moveable knife edge supports carry either of two beams of different thickness. Three load hangers allow loads up to 50 N to be applied while a dial gauge on a moveable stand measures the beam deflection. The set of weights needed for the experiment is included. Software is accessible for processing results.

This equipment is part of a range designed to both demonstrate and experimentally confirm basic engineering principles. Great care has been given to each item so as to provide wide experimental scope without unduly complicating or compromising the design. Setting up time is minimal, and all measurements are made with the simplest possible instrumentation, so that the student involvement is purely with the engineering principles being taught.
